Synthesis essay of project 3

                  From September until now, I worked on the blog project every week. Now the project is about to finish, and I will make some claim about what I have studied from this project. This project is not only helping me study in music field, but also practice my writing skills, and build my belief. I studied some researching skills about how to judge reliability of a piece of information. I also learn how to write a news on a website to my blog objectively.

At the beginning, it was really difficult for me to research the correct information I needed and cited it correctly. For example, my first week blog post is really rough because I didn’t know how to transfer the language in website to my blog. And also, I didn’t cite it because I didn’t know I needed to cite each resource that I used from the internet. After I finished project 1, my instructor told me that I need to have a work cited page at the end for each resource that I used. This is a really efficient way to make my audience understand what I write, and it’s also a way of respecting the author of the resource. It helps my audience to understand where my information came from. If it’s necessary, my audiences may go to the website themselves to explore more knowledge in the field.

In addition, this project also helps increase my writing skill. As a writer, I need to consider the feeling of my audience. I need to represent all the information objectively without bias. The post of October 17 about “Contemplating Controversy”is really good example. This post asked me to find a controversy in my field and introduce it without bias. I found a resource on the debate website. I needed to read each sentence really carefully because some sentences include bias. I needed to pick both sides of information correctly and present it objectively without using “I think”. This is the basic ability that each writer should have, and I learned this in blog project.

This project also helped me to build my belief of music. I am a rock music fan and also a guitar player in a band. And I am really familiar with how the band works. After I finish this blog, I find as a music person, it’s more important to learn the meaning and theory of music. I think the free post helps me a lot in this part. In each free post blog, I looked for some news in my field. During this period, I found there are so many conflicts and theories in my field. The free post of week 7, I talked about “lip-synch”. It’s a technical term for matching lip movements with sung or spoken vocals. I never knew about this, and after I read the article that talked about this, I changed my mind of “lip-synch”. Not all “ lip-synch” is good, but sometimes it is necessary. This totally changed my belief about the field of music show. Also I believe there are more conflicts like that which I never knew before. This project really helps me to know more about my field, and build my belief.

Finally, this project helped me a lot on my researching ability, writing skills, and realizing my field. I find it’s really easy to learn this way. We can talk about some opinions that we have, and blogs use Internet to deliver information, which I like the most. It’s a way for me to show myself to my friends, instructor and public. Also we can learn more when we get feedback from them.

                                   How does music used in film industry?

            Last night I saw the Korean horror movie "Bunshinsaba". I found the music use in this movie is really interested. I found sometimes in a horror movie, the scary part is mot the pictures on the screen. It’s the sound and music that you heard makes you scary. This is how the music uses in different industry.

            First I want to talk how the music used in movie industry. I have searched a video about interviewing that support my topic. Basically, the music used in film can lead audience’s emotion. Emotion is how the audience feel about the things they heard and saw. Correct music plus the interesting plot make the perfect movie.

            

Week 10 post

                 The website that I choose is the Ibanez official website. This website use the clearly description and nice organization to show their product. It’s really easy for customers to choose, and clearly show the advantage and disadvantage for each model.

               First, the purpose of the website is selling instrument. The website uses several ways to present their products. Also this website is trying to present their products in many different ways. For example: when you enter the website. It will show several of their new products with some famous rock stars. When you click on the product you want to see, you will automatically enter the product page and the data is shown up on screen. It uses pictures, data comparison, and words description to show their products. It’s really easy for their customers to compare the advantage and disadvantage. I think this website reach the purpose by this kind of presentation.

              Secondly, the audience of the website is instrument player. This company can sell more of their products by knowing their audience.  Also, there are some places in the website present that well. For example: each model of guitar have different famous guitar player as a signature. The company uses the famous guitar players to represent the products in order to get customers interested. I also think the second audience of their website should be their competitors. Nowadays guitar industry is really mature.  Each company have best product to represent their company. Ibanez website is also trying to awe their competitors.

            Finally, the style and rhetoric using is way to the point. I like the way this website use different style for different product. For example, if you click on the electric guitar page, the style is heavy metal. If you click on the hollow body, it will change the style to soft. The website use the performance of each product to decide the main style of webpage, it also showed the feature of each product.

Week9 free post

This week, I want share a concert with you guys. The band in this video is "Green Day" the most popular punk rock band. This concert is their new concert in 2013. most of songs came from their new albums. I share the video because I want everyone to feel the rock music instead of my writing. This is a great concert.  There are lots of classic songs from green day like "Basket case", "Holiday", and "American Idiot". Those songs have the meanings inside of it. The song "Holiday" represent sadness of war. The song "American Idiot" said some bad things about American Government. I hope everyone enjoy it.

Week 9 Post

why rock music is important?          

I find a news that talks about how music influence human especially rock music. This article explains why rock music is so important. First, rock music has the ability to integrate different kinds of music. For example, when people want some light rocks, they will choose country music and jazz music as a way to create. Also it’s an important genre of music because it has the power to not only influence but also sustain itself through different generations. The easy way to explain this is “rock influence culture.” In United States, rock music is an important way to speak to political issue and government. This become a way that citizen speak to government. People use different kinds of rock music like punk and classic to show their different feelings. This is the mind of rock music. Sometimes people ask me why rock music makes people exciting? I will say not only the rhythm, but the meaning of lyric is the main part. People understand what’s the meaning of lyric, they will better understand about the rhythm. In Europe and North America, rock music is the trendsetter in music field. Artiest use rock music to against government, to against war, to against everything that makes them unhappy.

The guitar industry is a really big industry in the world. The instrument “Guitar” has a long history and there are so many types around there. Today I will introduce different kinds of guitar, and functions of different kinds of guitar.

The first guitar that I’m going to introduce is “Acoustic guitar.” This kind of guitar is really popular and it has a common name called “Wooden Guitar.” Most people are familiar with this guitar. It used to play country music. There are two kinds of strings can be used in this guitar--- nylon and steel. The sound of this guitar is really light and acoustic.

The second guitar that I’m going to introduce is “electric guitar”. This guitar gave people an impression of rock. That’s true because this guitar is really good at metal sound, jazz and rock. This guitar has a composite material and only steel-strings. This kind of guitar also has some types. For example, in order to play jazz, I may use “Archtop “type, and if I play rock and metal, I may use “hard shape” type. I believe that most people know the band called “Green day” there are two main type of music they played. One is punk rock, and another is light rock. Resonator guitar is the type of electric guitar that they use when they play light rock. The sound is more acoustic than normal electric guitar, and it’s really big.

The third type that I’m going to introduce is not really normal. Most people may not seen it before and it’s really hard to play. It’s called “twelve-string guitar.” The only different between this guitar and acoustic guitar is the string. Actually, the twelve-string guitar makes the sound more enjoyable. This guitar is really expensive, and the skill requirement is really high.

How to learn in music field?

          Somebody told me before that music field is the field requires your mouth and skill. After I played band for several years, I feel that really deeply. There is almost no written skill required in this field except you are a lyric writer. I think the main idea of this field is “practice makes perfect. I personally have an experience about this sentence.

           Everyone will get nervous on the stage even they are really familiar with what they did. I still remember the first time that I went to stage in my high school. Before the performance, I practice what I will show lots of times. I think everything is going to be fine on the stage. But when I was on the stage, I saw lots of eyes were focusing on me. I started to get nervous and forgot everything. After that I know the key sentence of play instrument on the stage. Even you feel good about it, you still need more practice. Because this is the beginning of learn this instrument.

         Learn in music field is really different than learn in writing. In writing you also need more and more practice, but the most important point is being creative. If we can see something differently, we can write something differently. But in the music field, all you need to do is practicing. Every extra skill is based on that. That’s why most rock stars can improvisation, because they have practice the same melody thousands of times.

Is rock music dead?

         The resource that I found is a debate website. When I first look at this website, I found it’s really interesting. They are talking about is rock music dead or not. They have really strong both sides about this topic. This debate is mostly like a cultural conflict.

Pro side: rock music has dead. As long as the time passed, there are less teenagers  go to rock concert. Rock music is really popular at 60’s, but that all become history. The kids will ask a laptop or something popular as a Christmas give but not rock concert ticket. It’s just an art form, and there are tons of art forms in this modern world. People never need rock music to relax themselves, but more of popular events. The inventiveness that comes with optimism, the swagger that comes from knowing the world is your oyster is gone. And also, you can’t find any rock band that so creative like before. So rock music is dead.

Con side: rock music never dead. It depends on how you treat with the rock music. If you treat them like a part of your body, it’s never going to die. You can also put your soul into the rock instrument which cannot be done on an imac.  And also there are lots of creative bands all over the world. Rock music is rooted in the spirit of youthful rebellion, which will never die. The reason for why rock is not that popular now is fickleness. Rock is something can let you relax and see something clearly. So rock music never dead.

Is lip-synch good for a show?

          These days in China, the singing competition “The Voice of China” is ended.  There are lots of comments about this show. The most serious problem about this show is “Lip-synch”.  Most of audience got upset because of that.

           “Lip-synch”is a technical term for matching lip movements with sung or spoken vocals. In another word, it is kind of recording skill that put the audio which have recorded before and play it with the actual show synchronously. Today I just want to discuss my own opinion about it. Some people think it’s bad because it’s the result that already happened. People love to see something unusual happened. So they think this kind of technical make them disappointed. But I think this is a good idea to use this technical to improve the quality of the show. As an audience, we need to stand more on the producer and performer’s position. They did that in order to give their audience a good feeling of the show. And also, as an audience, we also wish to see a perfect show. From the appreciation’s point of view, I think it’s a good technical to use. But the producer is better to tell all audience is this real or not. Some audience think it’s a kind of cheat. So we need to face this as dual characters.

Entertainment is the primary function of music

                        Entertainment is the primary function of music. In my point of view, different kinds of music have different functions. For example, hip-hop music makes people feel intense, and jazz and blue make people feel relax and calm. For different occasions, people like to listen to different kinds music, too. When I’m running in a gym, I would like to listen to pop music, which gave me a lot of “power”. When I am doing my homework, I would like to listen to some light music. If I were sitting down with a cup of coffee, reading my favorite book, then I would prefer some jazz or blue. Sometimes I listen to some soft piano music before I go to bed, and I found this could help me to improve my quality of sleep. When I were on a road trip with my girlfriend, we would prefer some romantic music which can make us feel more relax and cozy staying together. One more secret I want to share with everybody is the music in the restaurant. I am not sure if you mentioned or not, but in some fine dinning restaurants, they play very soft music which makes you feel relax and comfortable, however in some fast food restaurants they play some pop or even R&B songs, which can make you feel rush and eat faster unconsciously. Music is playing a very important role in a lot of aspects of our daily life. The functions of music can be applied everywhere around us.

Week 6 Evaluating Sources

                The resource that I found is an article that talks about The Voice of China. The Voice is a music show like American idol. It gives different kinds of people a chance to perform on the stage and show themselves. Now The Voice of China season two just finished and the champion is already been decided.  But there are some people have different sound on the internet that said the champion is selected not decided. Some people also called “Fake Voice of China”. This article mostly said packaging skill is more important than singing skills.

               But for my own opinion, music is like packaging. People love music because the music can show what they thought and their mood. I think the correct way to being a good singer is show who you are but not pretend who you are.  I am not an experience singer but I really don't think packaging is important than singing skill. I am not saying that packaging yourself is not important, but as a singer or a band member we need to focus the singing parts. Package yourself is just a way to makes you look better, but what you have inside makes you win the champion.

              This season, the champion Li Qi is a really wonderful singer. He did package himself a little, but I think the singing skill is way important than packaging.

Why music makes people happy?

dopamin!!!

              “People love music for much the same reason they’re drawn to sex, drugs, gambling, and delicious food.”  According to new research, when you listen to music, your brain release dopamine, a chemical involved in both motivation and addiction. The finding also offers a biological explanation for why people love music so much.

             I have read a experiment that made by Salimpoor, it shows why music has been around for so long. “The intense pleasure we got from it is actually biologically reinforcing in the brain.”Salimpoor measure a group of people about shanges in heart rate, pulse, breathing rate and other measurement. Salimpoor’s group have found evidence that blood flows to regions in the brain involved in dopamine release.

          This is a really important discover for music field. Dr. Salimpoor use more scientific way to explain why music can make people so happy when people listen to it. But in my own opinion, music is like heroin. It can make you exciting when you play it and you will feel the world never stop. This is the feeling that most of music players will have. Music makes people happy, also in science field.

week 5 "Defining Ethics"

                          It seems like music and ethics didn’t have more relationships. But it you can pay more attention to your daily life, music plays more than just an aesthetic role in contemporary. It have more influence on social, political, emancipator, and economic. I can give a really simple example for that. It doesn’t matter where you came from; you need to remember your national anthem. That is a kind of influence in social, political, and emancipator. The way in which music engages with ethics are more relevant than ever, and require sustained attention. Music can also teach us how to listen carefully without bias. It teaches us how to cooperate with others and how to represent myself in order to reach the goal. However, on the other hand, music also plays an important role in disciplining and controlling of human beings.

              In addition, in our daily life, music always plays a really important role and nobody even notice that. For instance, American nation love to watch and play football. Also, if there is a home field football match, there should be so exciting for MSU student. When MSU team got a touchdown, the “Flight Song” will get played and everyone will get more exciting. That’s how music plays in our daily life. It makes people believe what they believe, and even more concern about that.

              I also think we can prepare more work about music in order to make it as a belief. First, the most popular way is creating the band like me. I can join more music club and get more familiar with it. Second, always giving a music show in public will also help you, you will get fun and even more experience about music. Third, you may take some professional class to study music; it will improve your music background and let you get familiar with it.

week 4 " Observing Community"

The “basement” band

                There are lots of communities that I can join for fun or to know something, but I still feel cool if I own a community and interview myself. Now I will in traduce my band to you, hope you are interested about it.

                  This is a really wonderful rock band. I am the leader of this band, and I am a guitar player. I am also a singer because usually a guitar player is responsible for singing. My best friend Junze is our drummer. Also there is a really strong person called Tailong is our base player. There is no keyboard in our band because we want really hard rock. We created this band together in summer 2013. In order to create this band, we all move out from dormitory and rent a house. Because we need to live in the first and second floor, so we always practice in the basement.  That’s where the name “basement” comes from. Now we are still in the process of practicing. We need more practice to have the tacit understanding.

                   We believe that rock make us believe the truth of life and encourage ourselves.  Sometimes we may invite some of our friend to came to our house and listen our rock music. “Believe life, Believe rock”, this is our band declaration. We want more people to understand rock music. That’s why we create it. Now we don’t have that kind of wonderful skills to have a show in public, but we will practice hard and get there in future.  I really proud of our band, it makes my life more colourful and encourage me a lot.

The old rock style

Sometimes my friend will ask me:” Ziyi, why you love those old rock music?” It makes me think about it a little. Nowadays, there are more and more rock band come out with the new rock music, but why I still love the old rock that much?

I tried to find the answer myself. I find a word called “classics”. I think the reason for why I love old style rock music is because of this word. When I listen the rock from Metallica and led zeppelin, I can hear the word that singer didn’t speak out loud. I can feel the environment that the singer showed. But nowadays, rock music never concentrates on the lyric. The singers all concentrate on the music itself like how the music sounds. But they never go into the deep of rock music. That’s the reason for why I don’t like modern rock music.

Of course it’s really important to let all the rockers know the mind of rock music. Rock music is just a kind of form. It’s true that it let people relax. But the rock music want people to know more about what’s going on around you. Rock music wants you to know the unfair events happen in your country or the environment that you live. So the lyric is more important than the music. This is also the reason for why the band “Green Day” is so famous right now. “Green Day” say the words that most people want to say, so most people love their music because of what they are saying. This is the theme of rock music. Also it’s important to let all rock players to know that. Let rock music players know what they are saying, what they are playing, and they will play fantastic rock music.
